Yesterday evening's much ado about nothing brought to the surface a lot of tensions that have been boiling underneath. We are all aware of the fine line that Oppo's mods must walk each day. Because of Oppo's direct affiliation with Jalopnik, Certain Topics cannot be allowed to be discussed as doing so may ruffle feathers at certain Other Places. It has already been mentioned by others that there is a fear that discussing Certain Topics can lead to an out of control discussion and by not being able to control the discussion may be perceived as an implicit approval by both the Oppo mods and Jalopnik staff of what is being said. There are many powerful forces at work that would have no compunction about wiping Oppo off the map. In fact, it may fill some of these people with a sense of glee to finally have an excuse to get rid of this place.
That being said, I feel that simply putting the kibosh on discussions of Certain Topics will ultimately lead to more harm than good. I believe the much ado about nothing was proof of this. It seemed as though we were at an impasse until I had an idea this morning. I normally abhor the never ending chain of sub-blogs and sub-sub-blogs around this place, but in light of recent events I think such a thing is called for. Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you the Cigar Lounge.
Because the Cigar Lounge is a .Kinja.com blog and not a .Jalopnik.com, nothing that is said there can be seen as a direct or implied reflection on anyone other than the people directly involved in the discussion. And if, God forbid, The Powers That Be decide to put an end to the Cigar Lounge because they cannot stand the thought of people saying things on the Internet that they do not agree with, at least the collateral damage will be limited.
